The company’s product, called a BearGram, was primarily promoted through radio spots read by on-air personalities. VTBC has a very severe “peak” of business surrounding Valentine’s Day, processing a few hundred orders on a normal day, and over 4000 orders on their “peak” day of February 13th. As VTBC is also a manufacturing company, they utilize Platinum for their manufacturing and inventory control needs, and the Avexxis system interfaces to Platinum. Avexxis handles a highly customized order process to handle the unique needs of the BearGram and greeting card, as well as all shipping and customer service functions. In 2003, the company expanded its offerings to include a line of sleepwear, called “PajamaGram”, and a line of specialty products from across the country, called SendAmerica (which later narrowed its focus to food items, and was relabeled TastyGram). In 2004, the company acquired a direct marketer of flowers and plants, Calyx & Corolla (Calyx). While the PajamaGram division is quite similar in nature to the BearGram, both TastyGram and Calyx use a highly custom drop ship methodology, with the affiliates using distributed technology provided by Avexxis/VTBC to fulfill their orders. The TastyGram fulfillment partners print out their own FedEx forms provided by the VTBC system, while the Calyx “growers” interface into a custom version of the Kewill Javalin system over Citrix, and manage their own queue of orders to pick and ship. Across these many divisions, VTBC has grown dramatically, reaching a peak of over 47,000 orders in a day in February 2007, with over 60,000 packages shipped on the peak shipping day across all divisions of the company. In the last 13 years, the company has worked with Avexxis to make thousands of modifications to its system to support their ever expanding product line and growth to a company approaching $100 million in sales.
