Case Study: International Greenhouse

Mail Order Manager Helps International Greenhouse Company Grow by 400% in 4 Years

The Company:

Incorporated in 1993 by David George, Sr., International Greenhouse Company (IGC) found quick success as a turnkey contractor of greenhouse projects.  Soon after, David had a vision to expand the company’s offerings by making affordable greenhouse structures, equipment and supplies available via the Internet to hobbyists, commercial growers, schools and private research organizations.  By 1999, David did just that and created an online mega store.

IGC continues to grow its online business and remains dedicated to offering the highest quality greenhouse structures as well as commercial quality heating, cooling and quality greenhouse supplies to any horticultural professional or enthusiast that is looking to create, control and support the ideal environment for their plants.

The Challenge:

Despite their web-based offerings, IGC processed all the orders they received manually, keeping only the basic accounting details in QuickBooks.  Hand written invoices and shipping labels were not uncommon.  This labor-intensive process was not only cumbersome and inefficient but, as David soon realized, also threatened IGC’s ongoing success.

To keep the business growing and his customers happy David knew that he needed to automate as many of the business processes as possible.  His goal was to find a full-featured software solution that would not only track all the stages of order entry, processing and fulfillment, but that would also grow with the company.

The Solution:

David discovered Mail Order Manager (M.O.M.) through an online search and immediately ordered the working trial edition which allowed him to test drive all of M.O.M.’s capabilities.  M.O.M. seemed to offer everything David needed to streamline the business, so after studying the trial kit he took the next step and scheduled a call with a Dydacomp Solution Specialist.

David discussed his requirements and reviewed all of the features and capabilities with the Solutions Specialist by phone.  During the call David found that M.O.M. was designed to work with QuickBooks, which IGC already used for accounting.  After several more calls with a Solution Specialist, David decided to purchase a single seat configuration of Mail Order Manager in January, 2002.  He opted to begin with the basic Main M.O.M. System configuration, allowing him time to enter his data and learn the system first.

David recalls “a pretty steep learning curve” in the beginning considering that IGC’s previous system was largely manual. During this critical transition period, he found Dydacomp’s Support staff very helpful. To make the most of his investment in M.O.M. David also attended the M.O.M. and SiteLINK Training Seminar in the fall of 2002.  David felt even more comfortable with his choice of Dydacomp and M.O.M. as a result of attending the 3-day training session at the Dydacomp headquarters where he also networked with other M.O.M. users.

Just a few weeks after attending the event, IGC added the Interactive Credit Card Authorization System (ICCAS), the Automatic Shipping Calculations Module (ASCM), the Order Import Export Module (IEM), and even three more workstation seats.  At that time David also made the decision to migrate their already successful website to Dydacomp’s SiteLINK ecommerce solution.

The Results:

David credits M.O.M. with supporting his ongoing business growth stating that, M.O.M. has allowed us to grow our business order volume by 400% over the past four years alone with a minimal increase in staff! In addition to the invaluable increase in automation, integration and operational efficiency, the database reporting capabilities have provided accurate and relevant information on product sales and profit margins which, in David’s opinion, led to the increase of both.

According to David, the unique M.O.M. to SiteLINK integration makes managing IGC’s multichannel business “simple and quick to do” for everything from inventory updates, product and price changes and automatic order imports.  The optional List Management Module (LMM), which IGC added two years after implementation, has been not only a great time saver but has allowed the company to communicate with customers on a regular basis via broadcast email with “very little investment.”

The variety of payment methods available to M.O.M. and SiteLINK merchants has been a boon to International Greenhouse as well. “The ability to integrate PayPal payments into both M.O.M. and our SiteLINK store,” says David, “has added over 100 orders a month to our business.”

Today IGC continues to grow with M.O.M. and is one of thousands of active M.O.M. users that help drive future development of Dydacomp’s products and services. IGC recently upgraded to the latest version of M.O.M., Version 6.0, and looks forward to discovering and implementing new features (some which David George may have personally suggested) that will continue to help improve IGC’s customer service, increase sales and cut costs.
